PEPSICO, DANONE AND NESTLE TEAM UP TO PRODUCE ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY BOTTLES

U.s.-based PepsiCo joined the Danone and Nestlé in a European project to develop 100% biodegradable plastic bottles, made entirely from renewable raw materials. Danone and Nestlé Waters had joined last year to the American company Origin Materials to create plastic bottles (PET) with cellulose fibers, like used cardboard and sawdust. The PET (polyethylene terephthalate), a recyclable material, is one of the most widespread plastics today and is widely used for food packaging and bottles. PepsiCo's arrival "is further evidence of the importance of cutting-edge technology, created thanks to this association called Naturall Bottle Alliance," said Massimo Casella, head of research and development of Nestle Waters said in a statement. After being able to produce samples of PET which has 80% of organic base last year, the partners expect to produce bottles of 75% bio-based until 2020 and rapidly increase this percentage to at least 95%, they say. The companies expect to produce 18,000 tons of PET from 2020 in a factory built in Canada for this purpose.
